During warmer months, Nashville Electric Service (NES) encourages customers to take simple yet effective steps around the home to reduce energy use while staying comfortable.
Don’t let your money slip through the cracks
Seal air leaks around doors, windows and attic access with caulk or weather stripping to keep cool air inside and hot air outside.
Save energy and stay cool
Set your thermostat between 76 and 78 degrees. Even just a few degrees higher than the most comfortable setting is a step in the right direction. Also, turn on ceiling fans to keep cool. Remember, ceiling fans cool people, not rooms, so don’t forget to turn fans off when you leave a room. Additionally, NES encourages residents to close curtains on the sunny side of their home and to open curtains on the shaded side to help regulate indoor temperatures.
Make small changes and save
When not in use, unplug electronics or use power strips, as many devices draw power even when turned off. On particularly hot days, minimize the use of heat-producing appliances, opt to line-dry clothes and set your water heater to 120 degrees to reduce cooling demands. Lastly, replace air filters to improve air quality and reduce strain on your HVAC system.
Get smart before you get away
Before leaving for vacation, turn off the water heater and unplug unused electronics to prevent unnecessary energy use.
