National Safety Month: Your Guide to Storm Safety with NES

June is National Safety Month, an annual observance dedicated to keeping people safe in the workplace and beyond. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, National Safety Month has been committed to offering free resources to help prevent injuries and save lives since 1996.

The safety of your home and loved ones is always top of mind, and we want you to have all of the tools ready for this storm season. Below are helpful tips you can use to prepare and stay safe in the event of severe weather.

Before a Storm, Stay Prepared

  • Keep your contact information up to date.

Be sure your current phone number is linked to your NES account so we can easily identify your location when you report an outage via text and stay connected. To update your number, log in to myaccount.nespower.com

  • Follow this checklist to be ready when skies are unsteady:
    • Fully charged cell phone
    • Smart phone weather app
    • Extra cell phone battery
    • Batteries
    • Flashlight
  • Download our new NES app!

You can now manage accounts, pay bills and report outages directly from your mobile device.

During a Storm, Stay Safe

  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed.

According to the FDA, food in an unopened fridge will be safe for up to four hours during a power outage. A fully stocked freezer will keep food safe for up to 48 hours.

  • Follow all safety guidelines when operating a portable generator.
Ensure proper ventilation outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning from the toxic engine exhaust. Install a carbon monoxide detector inside your home as a safety precaution.
  • Stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines.
In case of an emergency or hazardous conditions, call 911 immediately. NES will be notified right away to respond.

After a Storm, Stay Informed

  • Report your outage.

Quickly report power outages by calling, going online, texting from your mobile device or reporting through our mobile app.

  • Stay updated.
