NES Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and NES is proud to recognize the strength and resilience of patients and families affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer is a disease that can affect both men and women. It can occur when malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, after skin cancer. In fact, one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. It’s the second-leading cause of death among women. Currently, there are over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, but studies estimate 42,250 U.S. women may die from breast cancer in 2024.

However, advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase chances of survival. When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.

For several NES employees, the cause is personal since they’ve had close friends or relatives battle the disease. Throughout this month, the NES dome will shine pink and NES employees will wear pink to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.
