With the 4th of July holiday just around the corner, customers across our service are preparing to celebrate with fireworks. NES wants customers to have a good time, but to practice safety precautions while lighting up the sky with friends and family.
The most common types of fireworks are firecrackers and sparklers, and both can cause harm if used improperly. Fireworks start more than 31,000 fires each year. In 2024, 14,700 people were treated in emergency rooms for firework-related injuries. That’s 5,000 more than the 9,700 that were treated in 2023. Furthermore, 11 deaths were reported as a result of firework accidents last year.
If your 4th of July plans include fireworks, consider these tips to ensure you celebrate safely:
- Never allow children to play or ignite fireworks, including firecrackers and sparklers.
- In Tennessee, it is illegal to buy fireworks if you are under the age of 16. When purchasing fireworks, make sure to bring an ID and safely store your fireworks for the ride home.
- Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose ready in case of fire or any other mishap.
- Light fireworks individually, then move away from the lit firework quickly.
- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Never point or throw fireworks at people.
- Only use fireworks away from people, houses and flammable material.
- Never ignite fireworks in a container.
- Never light fireworks indoors.
