These Energy Tips Are No Joke!

April Fool’s Day is full of pranks, but these energy saving tips are no joke! Having a costly power bill is far from funny, which is why NES wants customers to take these energy savings tips seriously to help them reduce their energy usage around the home:

  • Turn off lights when you leave the room and unplug unused electronics. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, plugged-in but unused devices can set you back nearly $165 annually.
  • Switch to LED bulbs. They use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs.
  • Adjust your thermostat. Keep your thermostat between 76-78 degrees on hot summer days and 68 degrees in the winter to keep your energy usage down.
  • Cook cautiously. To save energy, opt to cook with your microwave, airfryer or stove top. Additionally, covering your pots and pans while cooking on the stove can keep your home from becoming overheated. If you’re going to use your oven, try to cook everything at once to lessen how much energy you use per meal.
  • Choose optimal appliance temperatures. Your refrigerator should be between 36-38 degrees Fahrenheit, your freezer should be set to 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and for a clean and energy-efficient laundry load, you should wash your items on cold.
  • Lower the temperature of your water heater. A significant way to reduce energy consumption is to lower the temperature of your water heater to the recommended setting of 120 degrees.
  • Maintain your HVAC unit. Have your HVAC system serviced annually to ensure it is working properly.
  • Examine your usage.
