NES honors service members for Veterans Day

November 11 is Veteran’s Day, a day that is dedicated to recognizing and honoring American military personnel and their selfless servitude to our country. Many NES employees are veterans or active-duty military members, and we are honored to have employees who have served in every military branch.

Veteran’s Day was originally established on November 11, 1919 as “Armistice Day” to commemorate the end of World War I. Then, in 1926, Congress later passed a resolution declaring Armistice Day an annual observance until 1938, when it became a national holiday.

Communities, towns and cities host parades, commemorations, services and other events to honor the holiday. Nationally, there’s an annual ceremony at Arlington National Cemetary where a wreath is placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 11 a.m. If you’re interested in celebrating Veteran’s Day today, here are some local events happening around Nashville:

  • Veteran’s Day Ceremony in La Vergne
    • A Veterans Day ceremony will take place at Veteran’s Memorial Park in La Vergne, Tennessee. The Parks Department will offer commemorative flags that can be purchased for $10.00. The flags will be on display in the Field of Flags and will also contain veteran information from the purchaser. The flags will be yours to take home at the conclusion of our ceremony.
  • Thank a Soldier using Veteran’s Day Postcards
    • There is a long history of country music stars—including Country Music Hall of Fame members Johnny Cash, George Jones, Willie Nelson and many others—serving in the United States military. To share appreciation for military members and their families, stop by the Country Music Hall of Fame from 10 am – 2 pm today to create postcards for active-duty troops. Cards will be mailed to those serving overseas through A Million Thanks, a non-profit organization that provides support to military members.
  • Field of Honor at Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage
    • From now until November 16th, 1,000 American flags will be on display. There is no charge to visit the Field of Honor display and everyone is invited to walk through the ordered rows of flags.

Many restaurants and businesses are also offering special discounts and free food to service men and women. For more information on Veteran’s Day events happening around town today, click here.
