Being festive during the holiday season can spread cheer, but Nashville Electric Service (NES) wants to remind customers to be diligent with Christmas light safety. Here are a few tips to shine bright while being safe this holiday season.
Christmas Light Safety Tips
- Replace old lights.
Modern lights have fused plugs, preventing sparks in case of a short circuit. Ditch old strands of lights that don’t have fuses. - Hang lights properly.
Don’t hang lights using tacks, nails or screws. They can pierce the cable and become electrified. Use hooks instead. - Indoor vs. Outdoor lights.
Not all lights are rated for outdoor use. Indoor lights have thinner insulation, which can become cracked and damaged when exposed to the elements outdoors. Make sure lights you hang outside are for outdoor use. - Keep an eye on extension cords.
Extension cords can occasionally overheat. Just touch-test the cord. If it’s hot, unplug it. - Turn of lights.
Don’t leave Christmas lights on when you go to bed at night or when you leave the house.
