The spring season brings blooming flowers, green landscapes and warmer temperatures, but can also bring severe weather. NES wants customers to enjoy the springtime while taking the necessary steps to prepare for potential inclement weather. Here are top tips from NES to help you prepare for spring storm season:
Make sure your contact information is up to date with us and sign up for text notifications.
Be sure your current phone number is tied to your NES account so that we can easily identify your location when reporting an outage. To update your number, log into your MyAccount at nespower.com. While you are signed into your MyAccount, you can also sign up for NES Texts for easier outage reporting. To register, select “Text Alerts” under your account preferences. This one-time step links your cell number to your NES account, making future reporting easy. Or, simply text “REG” to 637797 (NESPWR).
Once enrolled in the text program, you can report a power outage by texting “OUT” to 637797 (NESPWR) from your mobile device. NES will send a follow up text when power is restored.
Assemble an outage preparation kit.
One of the most important items in an outage kit is a fully charged portable cell phone charger to keep your phone charged if your power goes out. You should also prepare by downloading a reliable weather app on your phone and following NES on X and Facebook for severe weather alerts and outage updates.
Other important items to stock up in case disaster strikes include essentials like flashlights, fresh batteries, non-perishable food, blankets, prescription medications and bottled water.
Assume downed lines are live and report them to 911 immediately.
If there is a downed power line, customers should immediately call 911 and stay at least 30 feet away from the affected area. The wire could be live and potentially very dangerous. If it is a situation where a downed power line is blocking you from leaving your home, please do not attempt to go outside until help arrives.
Never drive over a live wire in your car or on a bike. Bright blue or green colored flashes near the ground can indicate snapped power lines, though these signs are not always prevalent.
Stay informed.
