As winter settles in, we want to take a moment to remind you how outdoor temperatures can dramatically impact your electricity bill. Cold weather causes many residents to crank up their thermostat settings and spend more time at home to stay warm. Unfortunately, this increase in energy usage can lead to a significant rise in electricity costs – and your stress level – but we’re here to help.
Check out these tips to conserve energy and save money while staying warm this winter:
1. Adjust Your Thermostat: Lower your thermostat to 68° and wear layers to help you stay warm. Heating accounts for over half of your bill; even a few degrees lower than the most comfortable setting can help.
2. Seal Drafts: Don’t let your hard earned money slip through the cracks. Check windows and doors for drafts and seal any gaps with caulk or weatherstripping to keep warm air inside.
3. Use Energy-Efficient Appliances: Make sure your appliances are energy-efficient and regularly maintained.
4. Take Advantage of the Sun: Open the curtains on sun-facing windows during the day to allow the sun to heat and light your home. Remember to close them at night to reduce the chill from windows.
5. Unplug Unused Devices: Don’t let unused devices drain your pockets. Unplug appliances, phone chargers and computer monitors that are not in use.
6. Maintain Your HVAC Unit: Change your air filters and schedule regular maintenance to help increase the efficiency and life of your furnace. This will keep your house warm while also saving energy.
7. Lower Water Heating Costs: Wrap your water heater tank with an insulation blanket for an affordable way to reduce water heating costs. Keep your water heater at the recommended setting of 120°.
By being mindful of your energy usage, you can better manage your bills while keeping your home comfortable.
