November is a time for reflection and celebration as the nation recognizes Native American Heritage Month, also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. This designation, established by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, honors the vibrant cultures, enduring traditions and profound contributions of Indigenous peoples—the nation’s first inhabitants. The remarkable diversity of Indian Country deeply enriches the quality and character of the United States.
The month provides a vital opportunity to raise awareness about the diverse cultures, languages and achievements of American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and American Samoan communities. It is a time dedicated to ensuring their rich histories and stories continue to thrive. We celebrate this heritage while also honoring Indigenous veterans who have bravely defended our Nation.
As we observe Native American Heritage Month, NES encourages everyone to take the time to learn about the histories, triumphs and current issues of Indigenous communities. We honor the lasting impact these communities have had and continue to have on our shared home.
