The NES dome is shining blue in honor of World Autism Month. Every April, Autism Speaks celebrates World Autism Month with World Autism Awareness Day recognized annually on April 2. NES is joining hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world that are lighting up blue in honor of World Autism Awareness Month.
This year’s theme for World Autism Awareness Month is “Act Fearlessly for Change.” The theme encourages others to fearlessly stand for a world where autistic people are recognized and have the opportunities they deserve. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults in the United States today.
If you’re interested in supporting Autism awareness this month, here are some ways to get involved:
GIVE: Make a meaningful, lasting impact for people with autism with your gift. It’s one of the easiest and best ways to show your support.
FUNDRAISE: Participate in a journey of purpose and passion with a 36-mile fundraising challenge for the 1 in 36 children with autism. Your support provides funding for critical resources, services and support for the autism community in need.
ADVOCATE: RALLY FOR CHANGE: The Autism CARES Act represents billions of dollars in federal support for autistic people and their and families. Contact your local representatives to support reauthorization of this legislation!
TAKE THE PLEDGE: Autism Speaks is asking teachers and kids to use their superpower to create a world where inclusion is championed and differences are celebrated. Take the pledge and stand against injustice and bullying, ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
