It’s National Skilled Trades Day, an observance honoring tradespersons who keep industries like construction, plumbing and electric work running efficiently. The term “trades” refers to an occupation that requires a specific skill set and education, like that of mechanics, welders, carpenters, electricians and more.
Raising awareness around the need for more tradespersons is more important than ever. Right now, there are more skilled trade job openings than there are people to fill them. More than 53% of workers currently employed in a skilled trade are nearing retirement, and approximately 1 in 5 students graduating from high school in the U.S. have shown interest in trade jobs. Trade jobs often require a certificate for employment – usually costing less than a four-year degree at a university. Skilled trade jobs also often offer excellent pay, benefits and healthcare.
Here are some ways to celebrate National Skilled Trades Day in your community:
- Educate. Teach youth that skilled trades are a great college alternative. Many technical schools provide the science, math and technology training required for trade jobs.
- Give Thanks. If you see someone in a uniform, be sure to thank them.
- Share it on Socials. Use #NationalSkilledTradesDay to say something kind about skilled tradespersons.
Happy National Skilled Trades Day!
