NES highlights Operations Internship in honor of National Apprenticeship Day

April 30 marks National Apprenticeship Day 2025, a nationwide celebration of the role apprenticeships play in preparing workers for successful careers through real-world experiences. The U.S. Department of Labor established the day to recognize the importance of connecting individuals to meaningful careers and assisting employers in building a skilled workforce. One of the ways NES showcases its dedication to apprenticeships is through its Operations Internship program.

The Operations Internship Program is focused on both skilled crafts of Electrician Apprentice and Lineman Apprentice. The program begins with a two-week detailed focus on safety including first-aid, CPR, AED, protective equipment, fire retardant clothing, job site hazard awareness, lifting techniques, forklift awareness, hazardous communication, emergency rescues, job site visits and a respirator fit-test. Each intern then rotates with work crews in the organization to learn level appropriate functions of overhead and underground aspects of the job, including knowledge and use of tools and equipment. NES recently graduated 10 students from its Operations Internship Program, in which at least 80% of interns are offered full-time employment after the program’s completion.

Through the program, NES is creating a career pipeline for Metro Nashville Public Students who are interested in working in the utility industry. Apprenticeships help strengthen our economy by developing a highly skilled workforce to meet industry needs and creating pathways for career seekers to catapult them into in-demand jobs.
