NES Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 to October 15 honors National Hispanic Heritage Month, a vibrant celebration of the incredible influence and deep-rooted history of American citizens with ancestral ties to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This month is an opportunity to recognize the countless contributions that Hispanic and Latinx communities have made to the fabric of our nation.

The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and it was later expanded to a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The choice of September 15 as the starting date is no coincidence; it marks the independence day for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Hispanic heritage is a cornerstone of American history, with a presence that spans centuries—long before the United States was even a country. From fighting in the Revolutionary War to shaping our culture today, Hispanic and Latinx individuals have been vital to our nation’s story.

Today, the U.S. Latinx population is a powerful force, exceeding 65 million people and making up 19.5% of the total population. They are the largest racial or ethnic group in the country and are a driving force behind our economy and culture. Hispanic and Latinx people enrich our nation every day as innovative entrepreneurs, world-class athletes, acclaimed artists, groundbreaking scientists, dedicated public servants and so much more. So join us in celebrating the rich history, vibrant culture and enduring legacy of the Hispanic and Latinx communities.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
