Metro Nashville 9th-grade students recently got to speak with NES employees about various careers in the utility industry at the 16th Annual Academies of Nashville (AON) Career Exploration Fair. The event was held at the Music City Center and NES employees from several departments were in attendance including engineers, accountants, linemen, electricians, analysts, specialists and supervisors. Employees answered questions about their experiences with working at a public utility and what they do daily in their respective roles. Students also heard from exhibitors from other professions like arts, media and communications, business, marketing, IT, manufacturing industrial technology, health, public service, hospitality and tourism.
AON was established 15 years ago and have been recognized by the White House as a national high school transformation model. The organization provides students with college and career preparation experiences and is founded on three fundamental concepts:
- Transforming the classroom experience
- Transforming the high school experience
- Transforming business engagement
More than 365 community partners work with AON to ensure students gain the appropriate exposure and experience a variety of careers. Additionally, local colleges and universities have teamed up with the AON to create access to a range of dual credit, dual enrollment and industry credentials that will better prepare every student to be college or career ready.
