Congratulations to Nathan Publow: Driving the Future of Power Grid Partnerships in the Tennessee Valley!

The Tennessee Valley is celebrating a major achievement in modernizing its power infrastructure, and NES Senior Engineer, Nathan Publow recently received an award for his critical contributions to the Unified DER Interconnection Framework and TIIR Development standards project!

This groundbreaking initiative was created to strengthen collaboration between the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and its 153 Local Power Companies (LPCs), ultimately building a more resilient, flexible and integrated grid system for all customers.

The Unified DER Interconnection Framework and TIIR Development project, a critical component of the Regional Grid Transformation (RGT) partnership between TVA and its LPCs, aimed to standardize and simplify the process for connecting Distributed Energy Resources (DER), such as solar power systems. Over two years, ten LPCs and TVA collaborated to adopt leading industry practices, including the IEEE 1547-2018 guidelines, resulting in 82 recommendations, with 29 required, to create a consistent template for improving administrative, technical and compliance processes across the Valley. This prepares the grid for future solar power developments by increasing efficiency, reliability and cost savings.

Nathan Publow’s work delivers key RGT value by enhancing grid resiliency and reliability through standardized interconnection practices. The framework promotes enhanced efficiency and cost savings by streamlining the application process. Crucially, it ensures readiness for growth by preparing the Valley for the rising adoption of diverse DER technologies like energy storage and solar.

Congratulations to our own Nathan Publow for his leadership in this pivotal project! His dedication to driving a unified and forward-thinking approach is a significant step toward making the Tennessee Valley’s power grid a model of efficiency and modern reliability.
