NES “Goes Red” for American Heart Month

The dome at Nashville Electric Service (NES) has “Gone Red” for the month of February in support of American Heart Month.  Each year, the American Heart Association observes American Heart Month to bring more awareness to heart conditions and advocate for better heart health. Below are a few facts about heart disease:

  • Heart disease is very common. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. These include African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Hispanic, and White men. For women from the Pacific Islands and Asian American, American Indian, Alaska Native, and Hispanic women, heart disease is second only to cancer. In 2022, 1 in every 5 deaths in the United States was caused by heart disease.
  • High blood pressure is also a leading cause of heart disease. Nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, which puts them at risk for heart disease and stroke. 1 in 4 people with high blood pressure has it under control, and in Tennessee, nearly 40% of adults in Tennessee have high blood pressure.
  • Having heart disease is costly. Between 2019 and 2020, the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity from heart disease amounted to $252.2 billion.

Every February, the American Heart Association holds events as part of “American Heart Month.” Here are some events happening across Tennessee:

  • February 7 – National Wear Red Day – wear red to help raise awareness of women’s No. 1 killer – cardiovascular disease.
