Nashville Electric Service (NES) is asking customers to help lower the heavy demand on the electric system by conserving energy.
Arctic cold temperatures are causing high electricity usage across the Southeast, and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has requested a voluntary reduction in electric usage. TVA is asking both residential and commercial customers to voluntarily reduce their usage as a precautionary measure beginning at 3 p.m. until further notice.
“Although we do not expect any problems in meeting our demand, we will experience our coldest temperatures of the season in the teens and single digits overnight,” said Decosta Jenkins, NES President & CEO. “We’re asking customers to help avoid putting an excessive strain on the electrical system.”
There are several ways customers can help.
- Set your thermostat no higher than 68 degrees. Put on a cozy sweater and warm comfy socks to stay toasty. Add an extra blanket on your bed before going to sleep.
- Put off chores around the house that involve electric appliances such as dishwashers, laundry and cooking during peak power times early in the morning and early in the evening.
- Turn off lights when you leave the room and unplug unused electronics.
- Keep your garage door closed as much as possible. This will help buffer any colder outdoor air from trickling into the home.
